In 2014 we founded Google X's central Industrial Design team to support “moonshot” projects. We collaborated with scientists, researchers, and engineers to work on some of the world's biggest challenges including health, energy, and transportation. Our collaborations included Verily, Makani, Wing, Dandelion, Loon, Driverless Cars and additional undisclosed projects.
Verily is an Alphabet company started at Google X devoted to the study of life sciences. We worked with the Verily team to envision miniature CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitors) to help people with type 2 diabetes to manage the condition with an emphasis on minimizing the size and rigidity of the body-worn components, and providing connectivity to enable more people to control their diabetes with timely, actionable information. Working with a team of scientists, we envisioned a device with the flexibility of an adhesive bandage. The project spawned an ongoing collaboration between Verily and Dexcom to develop the devices and bring them to production.

Makani is an X project developing an airborne Energy Kite to harness wind power at higher altitudes than conventional wind turbines. The system consist of an aerodynamic wing tethered to a ground station. We collaborated with engineers and scientists to envision more simplified and elegant launch and land systems for future 600kW 26 meter wingspan systems to reduce cost, improve reliabilty and serviceability and reduce visual impact on the landscape. Project Wing is creating a new commerce system that opens up universal access to the sky, building the next generation of delivery drones that can someday deliver everything from consumer goods to emergency medicine. Our team collaborated with aircraft and systems engineers, designers, human-robot interaction scientists, business experts and researchers to envision the delivery system from both the user and bystanders point of view and to design airborne delivery systems that are delightful, useful and safe.
